In the series of programmes in 2002, a workshop
was organised for the educators with the theme Green The Minds For A Sustainable
Society from 16-18 December 2002 at India International Centre, New Delhi.
Teacherfrom 124 schools attended the workshop.
Smt Renuka
Chawdhury, Member of Parliament, who inaugurated the workshop stressed upon the vital role
teachers could play in
educating and moulding the minds
of the children on environmental
issues. Director
DEEKSHA said that the aim of the workshop was to motivate the teaching fraternity to join the crusade
against environmental degradation. Teachers are important pillars around whom the
youth of today is growing & developing and the society expects them
to play a larger than life role in shaping the minds of the young and impressionable
children to achieve the desired results in environmental protection, she said. In order to have a cleaner habitat, we must devise ways to reduce and manage waste. Recycling of recyclable waste is considered as one of the ways to this effect. Talks were organised with a view to make the students aware about this important facet. A few of the techniques being propogated by DEEKSHA are segregation of waste, recycling, minimizing the use of non-degradable products and Vermicomposting to meet the challenge of waste management.
