The year 2003 was observed as the International Year of Fresh Water by the United Nations (UN). DEEKSHA  launched a number of programmes concentrating on conservation and management of Fresh Water. Our teams visited various schools and made specially designed presentations and distributed posters & training material about conservation of fresh water to the students.

On 21st April 2003, on the eve of World Earth Day, DEEKSHA organized a Seminar with the Theme,  Water Conservation - Role Of Educators”  at Indian Institute of Mass Communications, New Delhi for teachers of selected schools.  Smt Radha Singh, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, Government Of India, while inaugurating the seminar exhorted the teaching fraternity to join hands with the Government and organizations  like DEEKSHA in the crusade of Fresh water conservation. She lauded the tireless efforts of DEEKSHA towards this end.

During the month of May 2003, our team led by Mrs Tripat Parmar, Director DEEKSHA  visited various schools  in Punjab. The cities covered in the ten day programme were Jalandhar, Phagwara and Ludhiana. She along with the Team interacted with, made presentations about conservation of fresh water to the students of a number of schools and encouraged them to adopt an environmentally friendly way of life and to conserve natural resources. The team also distributed specially designed and compiled training material which included posters, handouts and magazines.

To stress on the importance of and impart basic training to the teachers on health management of children, a seminar was organised with the theme “Environment : Impact on the Health Of Child Of Third Millennium" on 30 August 2003 at  India International Centre, New Delhi. Teachers from 84 schools, experts from the medical and  educational fields along with noted social workers attended the seminar. Speakers from various fields made solution based presentations for the large audience on topics ranging from waste disposal,  Impact of air pollution on children, water pollution and health of children, Holistic Medicine in the third millennium  and  nutrition & health.

Stressing the need to take stock of the situation before it is too late the Director of DEEKSHA, Mrs Tripat Parmar, in her inaugural address said that a child's world centers around home, school and local community. These should be healthy places where children can thrive, protected from disease. But in reality it is not so. Globally, inadequate fresh or clean water supplies, contaminants and pollutants in the ambient air, exposures to hazardous and unsafe products and poor waste disposal practices, contaminated food are the major causal factors in determining the impact of environment on children's health. As these environmental factors rise, a growing body of scientific and medical evidence suggests that they are linked to many illnesses in children.

During the seminar almost all the speakers were unanimous in voicing their concern  at the alarming rise in air and water pollution in the country. They opined that urgent steps need to be taken to raise the awareness levels of the populace about sanitation around their residential areas and schools. They lauded the role being played by DEEKSHA towards this end.

Besides holding seminars and workshops for the teachers and students, our teams have been visiting schools regularly and making activity based presentations on issues like water and energy conservation, cleanliness & solid waste management and environmental upkeep to the students and involving them in activities linked to various issues to drive home the point of environment conservation. The response from the student community has truly been overwhelming and this has only motivated us to work harder towards our goal.

In September 2003, the team at DEEKSHA distributed literature on water conservation to children of over 1000 children of  schools of NCR at ITBP HQs in New Delhi. On the occassion, Honourable Shri I D Swamy, Minister For State for Home Affairs, evinced keen interest in the activities of DEEKSHA and lauded the efforts being put in towards encouraging children to play a vital role in various environmental issues. The Director of DEEKSHA, Mrs Tripat Parmar had a detailed discussion with the honourable minister on various projects being implemented by DEEKSHA.

In the month of November 2003, the team at DEEKSHA launched  a campaign on energy conservation. Volunteers drawn from various walks of life visited residential areas and explained to people the need to conserve existing energy resources today with special emphasis on Petroleum Products and Power. People were informed and made aware of various existing alternate sources of energy available today.

Towards this end DEEKSHA organised a seminar on energy conservation at Indian Institute of Mass Communications, New Delhi with the theme " ENERGY CONSERVATION - ROLE OF CHILDREN". The seminar was inaugurated by Smt Leena Mehendale, Executive Director, PCRA. Teachers from over 56 schools attended the seminar. Topics covered during the seminar ranged from utilisation of wind and solar energy, the success of the CNG as a clean fuel for mass transportation system in Delhi and fuel conservation.
