If the human society has to endure, not just for another century, but for thousands and thousands of years, we need to learn a way of life that can be environmentally sustained. “To Build A Sustainable Society, We Must Learn Not To Rival Nature But To Cooperate With It And Live In Harmony ” is what DEEKSHA believes in. It is with this realization that DEEKSHA has been working tirelessly to educate the masses, with specific emphasis at the grassroots level, regarding their specific roles for protecting our mother earth. DEEKSHA aims to disseminate environmental awareness by conduction programmes related to training, consultancy and greening activities among millions of students in Schools, colleges and universities of India as also by training the educators in the field of environmental education as well as implementation of programmes having a positive, social, educational, scientific, economic and cultural content for the optimum development of a sustainable society. It is with this aim in mind we have carried on in 2005 to inculcate in the society the need to have a cleaner environment. The year 2005 started with the Director, Mrs Tripat Parmar visiting the beautiful and enchanting state of Arunachal Pradesh in the month of January . She visited Lumpo, Tawang, Tenga and Bhalukpong, where she made specially designed presentations, under project Green Mind, to the school children about various issues of environment conservation. The response of the children, schools and the local administration was truly overwhelming. The issue of deforestation in the state was highlighted and children were urged to reverse the trend and be torch bearers in greening the state all over again. DEEKSHA received due recognition for its efforts in water conservation when in February 2005, the Ministry of Water Resources invited our Director to form part of the Citizens Charter for Water. In this various issues are being covered wherein we are covering the issue of mass sensitization about the urgent need to adopt practices to conserve water, through various mediums. We are stressing on the need to get safe drinking water. The training of the children and educators continues with our volunteers visiting various schools and interacting with the children and teachers on issues related to environment. One such interaction took place at Col Satsangi Kiran Memorial School at Delhi in the month of February 2005. The inquisitive children made the experience memorable and we can say with confidence that the coming generations are far more sensitive towards the need to preserve the environment. Under Project Bal Vikas, an inter school declamation contest was organized at Delhi in the month of April 2005. The topic given to the participants was " THE EARTH I WOULD LIKE TO INHERIT". Children from 30 schools participated in the contest. The finals were a keen and interesting event and at the end of the day Miss Neharika Bhatia of Carmel Convent School, New Delhi won the first prize. DEEKSHA announced its presence in the North East, with the first chapter opening at Kurseong (near Darjeeling) on the world environment day on 05 June 2005. Sister Ranjini Sebastian is the regional coordinator. A week long cleanliness drive was launched by volunteers of DEEKSHA along with the local students to clean the surroundings in the area as also to spread the message of having a clean and green environment. A rally was also organized to stress on the need to use paper bags as plastic bags are already banned in the area. Efforts are on to involve local women's group in our activities. The initiative, to involve local communities in the protection of environment in their areas, launched as KUTUMBAKAM in September 2004, carries on with the women self help groups contributing effectively in keeping the areas in their surrounding clean and green. The volunteers have helped in sensitizing the locals about the various benefits of following an environmentally sound life style. In a concerted drive the volunteers forming part of the programme, made visits to households educating the housewives about the role they can play in keeping the environment in their areas healthy, clean and green. The response of the people has been overwhelming. DEEKSHA along with the students of Colonel Satsangi Kiran Memorial Public School, New Delhi launched "VANAMAHOTSAV - 2005" in the third week of July 2005. Over 500 trees were planted in the week long programme.
